I've really enjoyed the Bald Eagles at Cherry Creek State Park this winter. They will be leaving soon and heading back north. They are just magnificent to watch in the air, the way those long wings flap and they glide. I was really lucky to catch two of them sharing a tree with a Golden Eagle (top photo). I will miss them and look forward to their return in November.

These are bald eagles that are wintering in Cherry Creek State Park, about ten minutes from our home. There are 10-12 pairs at the park. I've seen them a number of times. They aren't as skittish about you walking up to take their picture as I thought they might be. It was a cold, windy day at the Park. Lots of snow blowing on the peaks, if you could even see them. I was driving through Horseshoe Park and saw this bull elk so I pulled off the road and got out of the car. He just started walking towards me so I just kept snapping his picture. If I hadn't moved out of his way I think his antlers would have hit me as he crossed the road. He was beautiful.

I played around with conversions to black and white this weekend. These are some of the best ones of the Park. I'm amazed, and I shouldn't be, at how some of my favorites in color are so flat and lifeless in b/w, and how some that aren't so hot in color look good when converted. You can also apply different colored filters to these after conversion and that can make a dramatic difference also.

Thanks to my wife's suggestion, I went over to Cherry Creek State Park this am. We had just a couple inches of snow overnight and the sun had just come out. I drove up Old Fall River Road for the first time this year. It's only open 2-3 months so I had to make sure I got it in. It's a narrow, dirt, one lane road (up only) that's 9 miles. It goes from West Horseshoe Park up to the Alpine Visitor Center alongside the Fall River. Fall colors were beautiful in the Park also. But the roads were like I-25. I guess due to the fall colors and it's mating season for the elk. So they come down lower and do that mating call like a bugle. There were literally traffic jams where it took me 15 minutes to go 1/2 of a mile. Yuk.

I took the Old Fall River Road today. It's one way up, about 11 miles, dirt, narrow, hairpins. This was the first road in RMNP, built in 1920. Logan and I took the road to the top of Mt. Evans today. Highest paved road in the US. It's not a fun drive. No barriers and at some places you're looking over the edge at a few thousand foot drop. I went all the way over Trail Ridge Road and back. It's about 40 miles each way. Highest point is a little over 12000'. At the top the wind was blowing hard. I had on a sweatshirt, jacket and gloves and I was still cold. Great drive though. Gotta be one of the best in the U.S.

Wow, the sun was out in RMNP! I didn't know what to do. Went back to Bear Lake again, I know. But it is such a great spot - 9475' and very quiet. Quite a few people around this am but most of them were heading into the backcountry so the lake was still pretty deserted. Actually saw Long's Peak this time. Next post, I promise, no pics of Bear Lake.

Well, the weather was better. No rain, but still a low cloud ceiling. Not everyone can go to RMNP twice in a week and never see Long's Peak. The good news is there aren't many other humans in the park so it is very quiet. I'll try again soon.

Up at 4am again. Due to the distance from home I didn't get there until after sunrise, although it was hard to tell since it was raining. My first stop was the loop trail around Bear Lake. Of course, it was snowing there and I didn't bring gloves. That's where I took this picture. I also hiked around Sprague Lake and Lily Lake as well as visiting Moraine Park and Horseshoe Park. My son, Logan, and I got up at 4am yesterday to go to Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, CO. We arrived just at dawn and got some good shots. It was about 40 degrees and cloudy.
