They will be leaving soon and heading back north. They are just magnificent to watch in the air, the way those long wings flap and they glide. Lots of snow blowing on the peaks, if you could even see them. I was driving through Horseshoe Park and saw this bull elk so I pulled off the road and got out of the car. He just started walking towards me so I just kept snapping his picture. If I hadn't moved out of his way I think his antlers would have hit me as he crossed the road. These are some of the best ones of the Park. I'm amazed, and I shouldn't be, at how some of my favorites in color are so flat and lifeless in b/w, and how some that aren't so hot in color look good when converted. It's only open 2-3 months so I had to make sure I got it in. It's a narrow, dirt, one lane road (up only) that's 9 miles. It goes from West Horseshoe Park up to the Alpine Visitor Center alongside the Fall River. It's one way up, about 11 miles, dirt, narrow, hairpins. This was the first road in RMNP, built in 1920. I didn't know what to do. Went back to Bear Lake again, I know. But it is such a great spot - 9475' and very quiet. Quite a few people around this am but most of them were heading into the backcountry so the lake was still pretty deserted. Actually saw Long's Peak this time. No rain, but still a low cloud ceiling. Not everyone can go to RMNP twice in a week and never see Long's Peak.  The good news is there aren't many other humans in the park so it is very quiet. Due to the distance from home I didn't get there until after sunrise, although it was hard to tell since it was raining. My first stop was the loop trail around Bear Lake. Of course, it was snowing there and I didn't bring gloves. That's where I took this picture. I also hiked around Sprague Lake and Lily Lake as well as visiting Moraine Park and Horseshoe Park. We arrived just at dawn and got some good shots. It was about 40 degrees and cloudy. We saw about 15-20 deer out for early feeding. They are obviously used to humans so they ignored us but kept one eye out anyway. The early light made for some interesting shots. This is my favorite.
